Margaret was invited by her boss to come along with her husband (Graham) to a meeting of a newly formed Motor Club which they attended in December 1962, and became members of Longton and District Motor Club in January 1963 . This was the start of Margaret’s 58 year journey with the Club.

Margaret competed in production car trials, auto-tests and sprints and was head of the results team for decades. She collated information received, edited, typed up, duplicated and circulated the Club Bulletin, forming a team to assemble it and post to over 800 members within the Club at that time. Margaret became the Club Secretary in 1991 until 2016.

Margaret became known as the “Longton Matriarch”. She attended every event, as well as organising the Annual Awards Presentation Dinners. Margaret was also Secretary to the Club’s Isle of Man events from 1972 until 1989, and along with Graham attended Awards presentations at other Clubs and Championships on behalf of the Club. All this she did as well as raising a family and being a fully active partner and secretary to the family businesses.

At the first Margaret Malcolm Memorial weekend at Anglesey (Trac Mon) Circuit in 2021, Graham said a few words about her to the awards gathering, and his final sentence was “I was proud to be her husband”.

The Club is better for having had Margaret at the heart of it. For 58 years, her commitment, warmth and tireless dedication helped shape Longton and District Motor Club into the Club it is today. Thank you, Margaret, for everything you gave, everything you organised, and everyone you brought together. You are remembered with great respect, deep gratitude and great fondness.

And, as Graham so perfectly said, we can all be proud to have known her.
