Doran Moore

Doran Moore

For the past four years the start of the season event at Anglesey has been named in memory of one of our members and volunteer organiser, Doran Moore.  For those drivers who have been with the Club for some years he is remembered as our Chief Paddock Marshal making sure you all got to the start line in time to have as many runs as possible and resolving any issues you may have on the day, all with humour and a smile.

In keeping with our Club regulations about Memorial events, the 2026 season will be the last year that the April event will be named after Doran, so we thought that those drivers who have competed over the last few years might like to know more about him and how he got involved with the Club.

Doran was always interested in Motorsports but the closest he got at a young age was racing slot cars with his Dad in the Slot Car Championship in Southport (apparently a big thing at the time!).  He joined the RAF as a Boy Entrant and after his 18th birthday he was posted to Malaysia where the only motorsport he and his mates could indulge in was slightly illegal rickshaw races late at night or seeing who could make their Honda 50 go fastest.

Fast forward to 1978, now married with a young family he left the RAF for a new career with British Aerospace in logistics.  Over the years, he and his three boys were avid followers of F1 and made trips to Oulton Park and Silverstone whenever they could.  One of these trips indirectly led to Doran's involvement in LDMC.  He had finally booked a driving experience at Oulton Park but his 15 year old son had seriously blotted his copybook and it was decided he couldn't be trusted to be left at home for the day, so Doran took him along and parked him in the Pits while he had his driving experience.  On the way home, his son said he'd been chatting to some of the marshals and he would quite like to have a go himself.  Longton & District Motor Club was local and would allow a 15 year old to work in the Paddock until old enough to go on a post and so over time Doran stopped watching and got involved himself, eventually as Chief Paddock Marshal where he remained until 2021.

He was ideal for the job, organised, friendly and chatty and enjoyed the banter with the competitors.  As the Club expanded it's horizons, first to Anglesey, then reviving the Manx Classic on the isle of Man and later, Blyton Park, Doran was voted onto the Club's Committee and was asked by Graham Malcolm, the Club's Chairman to evaluate and offer his opinion on the Paddock requirements for each new proposed venue.  This was particularly challenging working out three different Paddocks along the closed road courses on the Isle of Man!  As well as all this, he cheerfully took on volunteers new to motorsport and taught them the finer points of safety and of being a good Paddock Marshal.  He also spent a couple of years as Deputy Chairman of the Club and lent a big hand in the organising of archived photos, press cuttings and LDMC ephemera for the memorabilia display at the Club's 50th Anniversary celebrations as well as being Chief Paddock Marshal at the LDMC organised Prescott Pageant in June 2014 which featured rounds of the HAS Speed Championship in collaboration with the Bugatti Club.

Above all, he got more Motorsport than he ever thought possible, made lots of friends and had loads of laughs and fun along the way.

The Club is better for having had Doran as part of it. Thank you, Doran, for your time and your dedication. You are remembered with great fondness.
